I have a Hewlet Packard computer that I bought in the fall of 2003. Last week almost all the music in my shared music folder disappeared. When I looked at the properties of the shared music folder it said that it still contains all the files and folders (4.23 GB), but the subfolders contained were empty except for two files. All the files that appeared with the windows media player icon were gone, and the two files that I found appeared as winamp files. After I ran a search for music files the other day 2 folders worth of music reappeared. Also, any text that I enter in internet text boxes or in word processing programs is stuck in italics. I tried to install McAfee Antivirus 2007 but I got a message box that said there were errors preventing a full install. My friend said that my hard drive might be going bad. What's going on with my computer and what steps should I take? Can I retrieve my music files?

Have you tried to restore to an earlier date? Might find them that way. Also, Mcafee %26#123;IMO%26#125; will cause you more trouble than it will fix. Also check your disk for errors. Right click C%26gt;properties%26gt;tools%26gt;check for errors. It will do so on your next boot.
2003? that is just 4 years ago, HD life is supposed to last at least 7-10 years without coming into any problems. however this lifeline is not guaranteed as there are a lot of reasons that can take its life.
