You can basically back up any of the files you want. The easiest thing to do is to get an external hard drive and use that to save all the files you want to keep. Then I suggest just formatting the computer and reinstalling windows or whatever OS you're using. Then just reinstall the files you want from your external hard drive.

Burn the files to CD or copy them to an external hard drive, flash memory.
Backing up your files is just when you put the imformation that you want on a disk, so you can clear it, or whatever. I can't think of any file that can't be backed up.
Burn files to CD
The best ways to store them are on a cd, dvd, or the best is a Flash Drive those store so much information and are so compact.
