My friend has a virus on her computer and keeps getting a blue screen of death...help!?

My friend's PC runs Windows XP. She has an expired Norton Antivirus 2005. When you boot the PC, Norton Antivirus automatically starts and in the yellow bubble in the bottom left corner of the screen it tells you that the computer is infected with a virus. However, when you double click on the Norton icon it doesn't open. The computer is much slower with the virus. After a few minutes a blue screen of death will show. It says something about disabling some BIOS options such as caching and shadowing if the problem persists. To get out of the blue screen you have to manually press the computer's reset switch. Then Windows boots up and its just a cycle that keeps repeating.

My friend went out and bought Norton Antivirus 2007 to get rid of her virus. However, to install it, she needs to get rid of her previous Norton Antivirus first. But she cannot uninstall it from add/remove programs as she gets a blue screen of death every time she tries to do it. Safe mode doesn't help either.

Good news it can be solved.

Bad news, it can be one of two things

1.) bad RAM

2.) OS

#1.) During BSOD (Blue Screen of Death), does a memory range show up, if so, is it the same one over and over again? If it is, there's you culprit, bad memory.

#2.) Your main OS files are corrupt. If your friend has the XP CD, she needs to have inserted the CD in the drive, have changed (previously before anything else) the BIOS settings to boot 1st from the CD-ROM Drive, followed by the HDD (Hard Drive) and save the changes. From there, she should be able to repair the OS. If that doesn't work, the only sure fire way to get rid of it for sure is by a clean install. NOTE:
