I know many others have asked this question, and a lot of the answers sort of confirm my suspicions about it being the RAM, but i'd still like to get different opinions on it.
When I first built my computer it would turn on for a few seconds, and then shut off. I tried a few different things including buying a new power supply. It turned out to be that my RAM had been plugged into the wrong socket, (was on the left, needed to be in the center). Problem solved, right?
Wrong. Shortly after, it started to do the same thing, except it didn't shut off like before, but actually turned itself on after I had shut it off. This continued for about 1.5 years, and now to my current problem.
The computer shuts off now when I try to run certain programs, or turn off others (i.e. run updates in AVG antivirus or turn off Folding@home). Most of the time it just shuts off randomly. I think the problem has to do with RAM because the CPU isn't overheating, and because RAM was my first problem. Thanks.
Computer restarts randomly, please help!?norton internet security 2008
O.K. Did you run Memtest 86+ on the memory? You may have a stick of bad memory. Did you also run Windows Defender?
Which programs cause it to shutdown? You may want to remove those programs and re-install them. Those programs could have corrupt files. Another possibility is a short in the power switch or dirty contacts in the power switch Contact cleaner from Radio Shack will take care of that..
